MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AT NORTH GLEN (Reviewed 1st March 2024)

North Glen Medical Practice is supported by a mental health triage nurse.  Our mental health nurse can offer support to our patients aged 17 years and over.

The practice is also proud to support our patients in providing psychological therapy in house.

Psychological Therapy

Your GP or our mental health triage nurse, may suggest that you would benefit from a course of psychological therapy as part of your ongoing care, therefore they may refer you to the Psychology service within North Glen Medical Practice.

Psychological therapy can give you an opportunity to focus on your emotional difficulties as you see them, in a safe, therapeutic and helpful way, with the aim of improving psychological wellbeing.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  •  CBT is used to treat depression and a range of anxiety disorders including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, health anxiety, social anxiety, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  • It is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviour can trap you in a vicious cycle.

  • CBT aims to help deal with overwhelming problems in a more helpful way by breaking them down into smaller parts. Therapists show how to change these negative patterns to improve mood. This approach focuses largely on current problems, rather than focussing on issues from the past.

  • Patients are typically offered six sessions of weekly CBT, with sessions usually lasting 50 minutes. Some patients require more than six sessions and this will be discussed with your therapist around session five.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • EMDR helps patient to process traumatic and difficult memories so they no longer feel painful or have a negative impact on day to day living.
  • EMDR may be recommended to patients over CBT when there are multiple traumatic events, or when a previous course of CBT for a single trauma has not been successful.
  • In the case of long standing difficulties due to complex trauma including complicated grief or developmental trauma, longer term therapy with another service may be more appropriate.
  • Patients are typically offered six sessions of weekly EMDR therapy with sessions of 50 or 80 minutes in length. Some patients require more than six sessions and this will be discussed with your therapist around session five.

Chloe Granleese provides psychological therapy in the practice.

How do I refer?

Please contact the practice to book an appointment with our mental health triage nurse, Stacey. During this appointment you and Stacey will discuss the problems you are having and complete a referral form. You will then be asked to book a telephone triage appointment at reception and will be given some information about therapy and a questionnaire to complete.

Chloe will call you for your triage appointment. This appointment will help her decide what form of psychological support might be most appropriate at this time. This could consist of attendance at a psycho-educational group (for example, anxiety management, self-esteem or mindfulness), individual psychological therapy, or a combination of both. She will also consider relevant third sector services where appropriate, and referral on to specialist psychology services where necessary.

Waiting list

There is currently a waiting list for individual psychological therapy at the practice, which can vary in length throughout the year. We will advise you of approximately how long you could be expected to wait following your referral. We aim to keep waiting times to the minimum where possible. We will contact you by telephone once a start date becomes available.
